Why You're More Photogenic Than You Think

A gentle pep talk on self-image, confidence, and the magic of good lighting and angles.

Let me start by saying this: you are not “bad at photos.” You’ve just been captured in the wrong light, at the wrong angle, and probably while mid-blink at too many points in your life.

As a photographer who, I can’t tell you how often I hear people say, “I’m just not photogenic.” And every single time, I smile — because I know it’s not true. Because admittedly, I have had those thoughts about MYSELF from time to time, so I know where you are coming from. You don’t need to be a model or know how to “smize” on command to look amazing in photos. You just need a little hype man or woman (me), the right energy, and a reminder that how you see yourself doesn’t always match how the world sees you.

Let’s talk about it.

The Selfie Lies

We’re used to seeing ourselves in a mirror — and even that’s flipped. Add in the odd lighting of a phone screen, a front-facing camera, and the awkward arm stretch of a selfie, and it’s no wonder most of us don’t love what we see. But here’s the secret:

Most of the images we think define us are not actually our best angles.

They’re rushed, unposed, poorly lit snapshots. They don't reflect your energy, your vibe, or the way your face lights up when you laugh. That’s where I come in — not just to take your photo, but to help you see yourself again.

Good Lighting is Magic (And So Are You)

Lighting changes everything. It softens features, brings out your eyes, adds warmth to your skin. That harsh overhead light in your office? Not helping. But soft natural light? Game changer.

Same goes for angles. We all have sides and poses that flatter us more — even models have preferred angles. A professional knows how to work with that, not against it. When you’re lit well, relaxed, and guided with gentle posing, you glow.

Confidence is the Real Secret Sauce

The truth is, when you feel good, you look good. Confidence doesn’t come from having perfect cheekbones — it comes from trusting that you’re putting your best face forward (literally and emotionally). I always tell my clients: “Let me do the work.”

Your job is to show up. Mine is to create a space where you feel like your most natural, empowered self. We’ll laugh, we’ll move, we’ll find that one little moment where everything aligns — and boom. That’s the magic shot. That’s you.

You Deserve to Be Seen

You don’t need to change a thing about yourself to deserve beautiful photos. Not your weight, not your hair, not your wardrobe. Right now — as you are — is worth capturing.

So the next time you catch yourself saying, “I’m not photogenic,” I want you to pause.

Ask yourself: Or have I just never had someone really see me through the lens?

Spoiler alert: it’s the second one.
